Michigan vacation, part 3

Ok, finally have time to post another set of pictures. Sorry for the delay, work and life interferes. After our day at the beach, we did take in several different historical places. These included..
a historic fort in Mackinaw City,

a lighthouse tour,

time on the beach, under the Mackinaw Bridge,

hmmm, imagine that. The mermaid is back in the water!

a visit to the Soo Locks in Sault St Marie and a museum freighter ship called the Valley Camp.

It was really interesting to get to tour different ships and learn what life was like for the people who lived on them. The kids had a harder time getting a lot out of certain areas, but we tried to help them understand what they were seeing. In the Valley Camp, they had a couple of lifeboats from the Edmund Fitzgerald, quite amazing to see and read the story of what is known about its sinking. Noone knows for sure if the lifeboats were ever used or if the men onboard never had time to get in them. Even Becca was asking questions there, seeming to understand the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

A favorite stop of mine was Whitefish Point, the point of land that juts into the area where Whitefish Bay connects with Lake Superior. It was a beautiful beach, with lots of rocks for the kids to sort through and collect. There was also a working lighthouse and we got to hear a real foghorn!

The ocean-going freighter in the background is the same one we had seen in Sault St Marie, getting ready to go through the locks. Thought it was interesting to see it further north, after the locks, about to enter Lake Superior.

While in Mackinaw City, I got up early one day to watch the sunrise. I wasn't in the best spot to observe, had a jut of land in my direct line of site, but was still beautiful to see.

I had the beach to myself

well, almost to myself

Enough pictures for today? I will try to post again tomorrow with the last batch of pictures.
