Vacation!

We survived vacation, or should I say, South Dakota survived the Amundsen family. We had a blast! Here are the promised pictures, I'm sorry the slideshow is about 5:30minutes long, but this was definately the easiest way to share our trip. The pictures start with Sioux Falls at their Falls Park (absolutely beautiful at night), to Mitchell's Corn Palace, Wall Drug, Mt Rushmore, Keystone's Alpine Slide, Rapid City's Bear Country USA, and the trail rides in Custer State Park.

The next part is of the Badlands. We all just loved it there. The kids were awed by the beauty and the amazing scenery. I felt like I am doing something right when I heard the boys saying to each other after climbing up a large formation, "Wow, look at that, it just goes on forever. How cool! Amazing!" It is nice to know my kids appreciate the natural beauty and not just the tourist traps. The kids had so much fun climbing and exploring the Badlands, they just had a blast.

The final section of pictures were taken in Custer State Park. That is simply a majestic area, with wonderous granite mountains, clear mountain lakes, lots of animals, and sweeping views. I could have stayed there for so much longer. The kids were excited to see an actual buffalo herd. The views from the Mt Coolidge Firetower were simply amazing. You can see an area where a fire burned thousands of acres in 1998, it is now starting to regrow some. From that spot, we could see the Air Force Base in Rapid City, Mt Rushmore, and Crazy Horse. Our cabin in Custer was at the State Game Lodge campground, absolutely beautiful. We lucked out, our cabin was facing a small trout stream and we had a waterfall right there also. I got to go to sleep listening to that sound. The only problem was I had to get up to run to the bathroom in the middle of the night due to the sound of the running water.

Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them. If only my pictures did true justice to the beauty of that area. If anyone is looking for vacation ideas, I highly recommend South Dakota, especially the Badlands and Custer State Park. The other areas are highly commercialized, but it is still pretty and worth the visit.
